Anyone else often feel stupid
or like you're not quite at the same level as other people your age? I do often and hate it.
Just been doing on of my unit standards (odd time yes I know) and came across a word 'discrepancy' so looked it up on internet to find the meaning of it and just confuse myself even more! The explain is using words like 'discrepant' and 'divergence' so just seeing those sorts of words throws me right off, in order to find out what ONE word means I'd have to look up another 3 words, then go back to the original word and translate all the words into plain and simple English. *sigh* Have written the word down and will ask someone at work tomorrow to put it into plain and simple English for me so I can maybe just maybe understand what a couple of questions are asking of me when they choose to use long and unnecessary non-English words. Will probably look like a right idiot asking. I mean if you're brought up in NZ with English as your first (and only) language, then shouldn't you understand the words that language contains?
Give me a theme and tell me to make an outfit I'll be fine, give me a canvas and paint and tell me to paint something, sure I can do that. Give me a word of the English language and tell me to put it in a sentence or find the meaning off it and well you've got me totally stumped. No wonder I failed English for everything except being able to write poems and short stories.
Why is it so hard for me?

Re: Anyone else often feel stupid
Hi logical, as mylife said we all have our different skills. Sometimes I'm envious of creative people like you, because I lack creativity big time.
A discrepancy, in simple english, is a gap between what things should be and what they really are.
For example, if a brocolli is advertised for 99c, but they are scanning at $1.50 at the checkout, there is a discrepancy of 51c.

Hey Logical, you do have a way with words and you write great posts so i dont know what your talking about! But we are all different we all have different skills, abilities, talents, strengths and weaknesses which makes us all unique
Yip jaffakiwi is right, discrepancy basically means "difference"
Learning new words is pretty amazing because you go from having never used it to all of a sudden you wil find ways to use it every day from then on!
We all have our strengths and weaknesses and its what makes us, us.
I wont list all my weaknesses, but i will say there are many things that make me feel stupid but ....
Cherish your absolute uniqueness I do!

Re: Anyone else often feel stupid
I have a cool tip some of you may not know about.
You can type the word define: (followed by a colon) and any word into google. It comes up with lots of definitions.
Check it out: Google defines discrepancy

Re: Anyone else often feel stupid
When I am having to focus on what I am writing and think about what I am trying to say and put it into words it is hard. If I can just write down what is on the mind it usually is fine.
Thanks guys for the explanations and your faith in me. I still feel stupid most of the time. But I'm used to it, and live with it. Just gets frustrating.
