Non Prescription Alternatives
Hi,
Just thought I would start a topic for the other options other than prescription.
Who has used them, what have you used, what has worked etc.
I am not particularly fond of doctors or had alot of luck with them lately, so have been looking at the alternatives.
I am currently using 5HTP (Solgar brand). You can get it from the health stores. Not cheap, but does seem to help me.

Re: Non Prescription Alternatives
I ahve always been advised to stay away from saint johns wort with clinical depression.
A lot of the anti-depressant medication also advises not to take it while taking the medication.
One thing whicch is good if you need a little pick up to get over a hump is rescue remedy or avena comp. sedative drops by Welda.

The MedSafe website has an interesting caution regarding the use of
St. Johns Wart in some situations.

Re: Non Prescription Alternatives
Does anyone else have any recommendations? I'd be most interested in hearing about them. I'm a rescue remedy girl myself and tomorrow I'm going to have a look for a couple of natural sleep remedies recommended in another thread. Damn insomnia!!!! Remember if you are on meds natural remedies can upset things so do get professional advice.

Re: Non Prescription Alternatives
I'd be very interested to know more about natural sleep remedies, cos I forgot to ask my GP for sleeping meds yesterday and a 'phone phobia makes it um, awkward to just ring up and ask for a script. Ah, its going to be a long four weeks till my next appointment.
Re: Non Prescription Alternatives
I think it was Roswell who recommended two possible sleep remedies - rescue sleep and Avens Comp sedative drops by weleda. I have used other weleda products in the past and found them to be really good. Roll on a good nights sleep Or even 6 hrs or so! Bliss. I'll be trying something tomorrow night for sure so will let you know how it goes.

Hi all,
Please find below a link to the home page of Christins's Home Remedies.
According to her webpage she is a medical doctor and a homeopath. the website provides natural cures for a number of health complaints and includes a section on depression and another on anxiety.

I know I keep forgetting to take my magnesium (I feel like a pill box some days).
I actually got it cos it is meant to be good for things like muscle cramps too. Now when was talking to the health store guy, he said you are much better off to get a magnesium tablet (capsule) that contains the magnesium in its different forms as it works better - is better absorbed or something. So look out for one that has magnesium as Oxide, as Orotate, as Phosphate, as Aminio Acid Chelate.
The one I got is Nutralife Magnesium Complete
(a total Magnesium formula.
For nervous tension, muscular cramps & spasms, relaxation and sleep)
Instructions are to take one a day
It was $28.90 for 100 capsules.
As for the benefits, like I say, I am shocking at remembering to take everything. I try not to take everything at once - I think that is my problem.
Must make more effort to take them.
Hope this info helps a little anyway.

Intresting you talking about magnesium Lonely, I was reading a website last night that says it may be a "natural cure" for majpr depression, anxiety etc.
Don't beat yourself up about forgetting to take things, with me being unwell at the moment I keep stuffing up on my meds espically at night and often accidently end up doubleing up on my anti depressant which is only meant to be taken in the morning.
I have also been remiss in taking my multi vitamin which friends say I should be taking. Maybe it will help.
Cheers

We all need to be kind to ourselves. Next time I'm at the health shop I'll ask about the magnesium too. I wonder what other sources of magnesium are Got some rescue sleep - so far so good - not zonking me out or anything but does help to slow the brain down so much better sleep last night. The 2 hrs in the pool with Mr 6 yesterday also helped

Re: Non Prescription Alternatives
I haven't been back to town but will def be following up about the magnesium. I've stocked up on rescue remedy and am giving the rescue sleep a go - so far a slight improvement with the insomnia. I think the exercise (mainly biking and walking) is helping too. I'd love to hear of any other natural alternatives if any one is willing to share info. Cheers.

Re: Non Prescription Alternatives
Yeah, go on then.
You can post pretty much anything you like here, unlike on TradeMe where you get growled for stuff like that. I'm all for shameless promotion - how do you think you got to hear about this place?
Hey, and I'm glad you came back and shared some of your time with us - thank you. I hope all goes well with the doctors visit (I know, different thread, I shoulda commented in there, but this is as close as I can get to multitasking, lol). Yes, this communicating, participating and 'fitting in' stuff is bloody hard, isn't it. My solution was to start a message board so I'd have friends at the click of a mouse. Thats the smartest thing I've done in years.
Have a great day and stay safe,
Pat.

Re: Non Prescription Alternatives
Thanks so much for that Star. I've put some of her auctions on my watchlist to go back and look at - they look really good. I've been a bit slack with my diet (by that I mean craving, and eating, chocolate) and thought some of her nutrition books look good . I think I'll treat myself and splash out.
Hope things went well with the Doc. I know what you mean about work. I'm on holiday at the moment and I'm spending waaaaayyyy too much time on the computer

The doctor was really good. far better than my last one, i spent heaps of time with her and she went thru everything with me. she decided to put me back on citalapram for the anxiety and depression so will see how that goes...

Re: Non Prescription Alternatives
How is everyone? I ate badly this week and boy do I feel it now! But that damn chocolate had my name on it Thought I might give a naturopath a go - anyone had experience with one? I've never been before. Still chewing on my rescue remedy (find I use less of the chewy 'tablets' than I do drops). Have a good weekend everyone. Star - hope meds are helping.

Good morning,
I over the last week I have been spikeing my morning coffee with magnesium. It seems to be helping. I am not as anxious, not as low and seem to be able to rest better at night and even sleep !
