Pet Flea Collars contain Diazinon

There seems to be a bit of a fuss being made in France and possibly the UK over a chemical poison first developed in WW2 to be used against humans, and which is today used in the manufacture of cat and dog Flea Collars that we get at the supermarket.

This chemical is called Diazinon.

Usually I'd offer more than a 'Daily Mail' report as a reference but I remembered these two first, so here we are.

I’ve checked the packaging of the last flea collar I got TBT from the supermarket here in Marton (branded ‘VitaPet’) and the active ingredient listed on the front of the packaging is Diazinon.

This stuff Diazinon is Licenced in NZ for use in animal remedies of various sorts and its use in domestic animal flea collars has been discussed in some detail (just do a NZ-only web pages Google Search for Diazinon).

I don’t know the current NZ Ministry of Health thinking on the continued safety of this poison on domestic cats and dogs, but I might just ask them, for clarities sake.

If anyone in your household has allergies or is often unwellish and you have cats or dogs wearing these Diazinon- impregnated flea collars, then maybe, …?

I’m gunna be looking for an alternative to these collars for my cat TBT and if anyone has suggestions and an indication of costs of alternative flea control thingies, I’d love to hear from you.
