“One of the most complex and potentially lengthy disciplinary hearings in New Zealand medical history is to take place in Hamilton next month.
Suresh Vatsyayann was suspended from working as a GP by the Medical Council last year and now faces a hearing before the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal, which has the power to stop him practising.
The hearing is set down for two weeks.
Tribunal spokeswoman Gay Fraser said there was one charge against Vatsyayann, with four parts to it. She would not provide details but he has previously been found guilty of professional misconduct and was fined $5000 with costs.
Vatsyayann has been a high-profile medical practitioner and has a loyal band of supporters in the city, mostly former patients he refused to charge. They have held public rallies calling for his reinstatement, and many of them are expected to be at the hearing .
He has campaigned unsuccessfully for mayor and was last year suspended from the Waikato District Health Board.
Vatsyayann told the Sunday Star-Times he was "absolutely not" worried about the hearing. But his wife Subhash said he was distressed and not himself.
Fraser said it was possible an oral decision could be given at the end of the hearing but, given the case was "lengthy and complicated", the tribunal could choose to wait for a written decision, which could take up to four weeks.
- Sunday Star Times”
Ends.
Paddy.
PS. Sorry Stuff.co.nz - yes, I did add the word Hamiliton to your headline, to make the item more relevant to members. My Bad.
