Packing and found a photo
As you guys know I am on the move this weekend. I have spent the night packing and found in one my my boxes a crew shot from my time while I was with Rural Fire. It is a shot of us at a storm responce call out, we are lined up in front of a helicopter.
It brought up mixed feelings. Some good memoeries from my time with Rural Fire but also some feelings around the fact I cant do it any more and what happened when I had my relapse in 2007.
I showed it to my flatties and one asked why I had had it buried in a box.

Good luck with your move Rossie. Quite an upheaval to shift, isn't it!
Photos often have that mix of emotions. Positive memories of that involvement AND regret because that time is over.
Hope the weather is fine for you .................... Daze

Re: Packing and found a photo
Hey ros, Must be the season for shifting...Im nearly on the move also.....was looking thru a house today....and last room I looked in had a calendar.....from my year of birth....(now that was not just twenty odd years ago).....but when I got closer, be buggered, the page was on my month of birth!! For starters I was delighted, now....a couple of hours later, I am feeling a bit freaked...LOL
I think most experiences and times in our lives bring up many mixed emotions. thats all they are, feelings hey, I always have to work very hard to remind myself the past is gone, its all about today....then next morning....hello, another new day....
Depending on what the emotions are ofcourse, and how much they are affecting you....maybe talk or write about them?
It must have been an amazing feeling to be part of a team with choppers etc, love choppers I do!
hows the packin going, I am feeling...panicky about packing, I really dont know where to start...any tips?

Re: Packing and found a photo
Hey Apricot,
I do have a couple of tips for packing. I dont know if you are packing a whole house or just a couple of rooms. I am just packing my room (single room).
Break the job down, dont try do it all at once. I.e. I did the bookcase (a big job), then the wardbrobes, then desk and all I have is some misc to do.
Do take breaks, it is hot, heavy and sweaty work. Have a bottle of water handy to drink from.
Oh and the most important thing, crank the music, makes the time fly.
An advantage of shifting is you get to do a good clean out. I have got rid of all my old course notes, half a dozen water bottles and two boxes of books.
All the best with your shift.

Re: Packing and found a photo
Im doing a whole house shift.....a bigee. Urgh, but yes and a huge smile to the clean out thing.....I have not moved much in my life, hence I dont really know how to go about things....Im finding it quite scary, the whole process, from agents to winz, power companies etc...all new to me...learning curve I guess.
Giggles, be so much easier and cheaper if we could just hull in like bunnies eh!
thanks for the tips Ros, and good luck with your move too. hmm, yes books, cant live without mine either, wouldnt be so bad if the libraries had them all.

Re: Packing and found a photo
Hi there
Having moved recently, my tips are; LOL DONT MOVE!!!
BUy LOADS of TAPe from the Warenui.
Pack small stuff into your big stuff So in your microwave you may find some tupperware and some tea towels. In your tupperware you may find your egg cups...
Tape all doors - fridge-freezer, microwaves etc
If packing lots of little stuff or stuff you want to pack away for years - photograph all the stuff and stick the photo on your packed box.
OH and OH all those nuts and bolts for beds or for units or somethingarathers - put them into a plastic bag label the bag then tape it round and round the somethingarather.
Pack a special box: one for when you get to the new place, tiz called a survivor's pack. (Jug, Milk, coffee, sugar, tea...some biscuits: Cups too)
Take breaks Apricot - and drink lots of water

Re: Packing and found a photo
Thanks Poetry.
Oh man, if only I didnt have to move, there is no way I would be.
I am going from a place where each bedroom has a double wardrobe, and a huge linen cupboard, to a house, that has only a small linen cupboard, and only one of the 3 bed rooms has a half size wardrobe. Its crazy. Housing NZ will not allow us to stay put once I get my children....overcrowding.....yet, I can move to another house of same amount of rooms.....
I shouldnt say this, but some one said to me, if you had colour, youd be allowed ten people inside and twenty in the garage. Its feeling a bit like this. 5 people to a 3 bedroom house.
Grandma in her own room, 2 boys in a room, daughter and myslef in a room....not allowed.
Im feeling this at present, as over night I have begun to realize, logistically spacewise.....its looking bloody tight for storage. Cant get away with needing layers of blankets etc down here over winter. Etc.....
Bugger. Want to puke, tummy feeling churny.

Re: Packing and found a photo
Hi Apricot ...... Hope your move goes Ok. That does sound a bit strange that you can move from one 3 bed house to another 3 bed house - overcrowding in one and not the other????
Do hope you're feeling a bit more settled now ...... Daze

Re: Packing and found a photo
Hi daze, yes, its so silly, powers that be, would rather get us out, and have us having to look at the cheapest accommodation available....ie, the smallest, and oldest.....no way can I afford 300$ rents etc.
I just feel rather disillusioned and very angry at present. Also very unsettled. I have a hard job in just the day to day stuff, without worrying about finding a roof for over heads! And,...the dreaded shift, cant exactly have much help from an 88 year old...and, being naturally shy and finding it hard to mix....dont know many people at all. Sometimes...I wish.....

Re: Packing and found a photo
So....housing nz have said kids and I can stay untill I find suitable house. I meet with them next week and will put my name down.
I will not be taking the wee cottage I did love. I came to thinking, its a hundred years old, litterally, and how much insulation is that going to have....F.A....thus, the power bills for winter would have been huge to heat a draughty house, when for 40 extra bux per week I could have a modern house.
So...I went thru land agent, and explained...and asked if rent could be reduced, since although the cheapest....it still was not worth the money. Owner turned down offer.
I am planning to keep on keeping on with the tidying, sorting, biffing out etc, and hopefully htat will be a big help when the time comes. i am kind of living in fear of when the children arrive......how much stuff will they bring. I do feel overwhelmed with it all. It will be great to have my kids back to protect care for and love again, but man, I am so scared. Scared of failing.
So Ros, its only you moving at present. Hope its all going well thus far.
