An unforgivable fate...

The rain pelted down the side of the house while she stared outside the window, longing for her husband to arrive. Ten minutes he promised her, ten minutes then he would be safe and sound with her.

Her heart thumping, in sync with the pitter patter of the rain hitting the roof. Her thoughts racing, yet she did not have a clear mind.
It was two years ago, on a night like this, that she lost her only daughter, Gemma to the weather. Her mind constantly recalled it, no matter how hard she tried to forget.

Watching the cars go by, hoping in her heart that he would not be condemned to the same fate as her beautiful daughter, who never got the opportunity to start her life.
Tears filling her eyes, recalling the knock on the door. She shivered, knowing there was nothing she could do to bring her daughter back, yet she wished more than anything to see her face, hear her laughter once more.

She jumped as she heard the oven beep. It was her husband’s favourite chicken pie, almost ready. She wiped the tears from her eyes and looked at the clock, thinking he should have been home 20 minutes ago.
After setting the oven to low, she ventured through the house, remembering how wonderful things were; how easy life was. Looking upon a picture of her daughter, at the tender age of ten, oblivious to what would soon happen. Unknown to how much grief her little baby would cause her.

Walking through the house, dragging one foot after another, she noticed a slice in the carpet just in front of her daughter’s bedroom. How she did not spot it before, she had no idea. It was so obvious.
Figuring out how it got there, she investigated a little more. Seeing a corner of something, she became very intrigued. Slowly, she separated it from the only place it ever lived.

Fear crossed over her eyes as she saw her daughter’s handwriting. She felt as if she were made of ice, unable to blink, unable to move. Too afraid to open it, she slid down the side of the wall; confused and her heart feeling as if it were breaking all over again. All it said was “Mum”, but that was enough to know something wasn’t right, something mustn’t have been right. Her world was spinning around her, the rain became louder, thrashing about the windows.

Feeling as if she was going to throw up, she closed her eyes. She tried to calm herself down, but the note, the three letters on the front conquered her mind from anything else. Getting up quickly, she staggered to the bathroom and splashed water all over her face. Looking up at the mirror, she saw herself properly for the first time.

She noticed that she stopped trying. She didn’t take pride in herself anymore. Her hair, once chocolate brown with a brilliant shine to it. Now it was like a dry patch of hay, determined to stay in a bundle. Her frown lines should have belonged to someone much older than herself. She closed her eyes and shook her head, then looked deeper. Her eyes, they looked broken and empty. They looked lifeless, with no trace of happiness or pleasure in them. Afraid of her reflection, she glanced down not realising she brought the letter with her. She sighed heavily, knowing she should read it.

Tears started to cover her vision once again while she walked to her daughter’s room. Looking around, wondering what it would have possibly looked like if her daughter were still here.

((more to come later))
