Whats your diagnosis?
Hi there everybody,
Just been sitting here reading wikipedia and it struck me how frustrating it is not knowing whats wrong with me. I would like to define myself as having "Major Depressive Disorder", but noone has ever actually said that to me, you know?
So my question for you all today is:
1) Have you been given a concrete diagnosis for your mental condition? What is it?
and
2) If so, how well do you think it fits. If not, what are you leaning towards?
Thanks to all those who share.

Re: Whats your diagnosis?
After battling around for10 years or so I was diagnosed with Cyclothymia. I was relieved to get a diagnosis but also bummed as I wasn't going to just get better. IYKWIM? Diagnosis fits perfectly, makes sense, and I have a better understanding of whats going on and why. I understand why I used to do random things now. My husband understands better now why I am the way I am and provides the right support. I have a brilliant psychiatrist who I was appointed in December last year who worked out what was up with me and who I visit regularly. He sorted out my meds finally and I am getting on with life so much better!
I really believe its a matter of being a squeaky wheel. Keep visiting your GP and eventually they will send you off to a specialist.

Re: Whats your diagnosis?
I have two diagnosis:
1. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
2. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Read my poem 'Others and Me' in the 'Writing in Own Words' section and that explains how I feel about them.
The PTSD label was after they discovered that the first label 'Major Depression' didn't fully fit. PTSD is more accurate.

Re: Whats your diagnosis?
Hey Jaffa,
I tend to find diagnosies tend to change with what ever happens to be in flavour at the time. I have also had a couple of other people say this to me as well.
I have been diagnoised with liable mood disorder (depression), cronic anxiety and traits of boarderline personality disorder.
Though I don't hang my hat on these I have found them useful to understanding whats going on and why I feel the way I do.
It might be useful when you see your doc or specalist next just to ask them to give you a diagnosies and explain what it means, alternativley ask for your medical records.

Re: Whats your diagnosis?
Hey,
Access to records comes under the Privacy Act 1993 ( http://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/public/1993/0028/latest/DLM296639.html?search=ts_act_privacy+act_resel&sr=1 )espically under principal 6:
Principle 6 Access to personal information
(1) Where an agency holds personal information in such a way that it can readily be retrieved, the individual concerned shall be entitled—
(a) To obtain from the agency confirmation of whether or not the agency holds such personal information; and
(b) To have access to that information.
(2) Where, in accordance with subclause (1)(b) of this principle, an individual is given access to personal information, the individual shall be advised that, under principle 7, the individual may request the correction of that information.
(3) The application of this principle is subject to the provisions of Parts 4 and 5 of this Act.
What you need to do is write a letter to your GP or relervant health provider as the case may be adviseing them that you wish for a full copy of your medical records. You hand this into your health provider or post it. They have 20 working days to respond to the request and there is only limited grounds for refusal under sections 27 to 29. Please note section 29 (1) cii which is often used in mental health cases:
c) After consultation undertaken (where practicable) by or on behalf of the agency with an individual's medical practitioner, the agency is satisfied that—
(i) The information relates to that individual; and
(ii) The disclosure of the information (being information that relates to the physical or mental health of the individual who requested it) would be likely to prejudice the physical or mental health of that individual; or
They are not allowed to charge for you getting a copy of your records, they are a your records so you have a right to access and have a copy of them.
Hope this helps

Re: Whats your diagnosis?
well I have not said much on here and thought, I would answer this. where to start.
it started when I was 5 - 11 with SA anxiety set in insecurity, felt inferior, growing up, even in my adult life, I suffered some bad experiences, but thats another story.
had a business in my first marriage lost it all had a break down diagnosis major depression, suicidal. 1995
got married again, again bought into a small business built it up, at the time, suffering depression. eventually closed the business, I was employing step children, my wife was an alcoholic, which I tried to help her but after 9 yrs success, was only minor, but all it done was make me worse.
anyway getting off track, I feel I have to justify myself, so why my explanation is drawn out.
so lost my business having to close it down but there is an explanation which I wont go into, marriage broke down due to depression, but no support, my family got me back hm and ended up is psychiatric ward, 3yrs ago, I am still trying to cope, one day at a time.
which brings me to diagnosis 2 major depression was recorded and PTSD

Re: Whats your diagnosis?
For me,
the diagnosis has changed as I became to closer
to Being Healed.
Its fascinating looking back the route one has travelled
to becoming more totally-here in Life,
Right NOW!
What we are lead to believe seems to have caused me to investigate(fully)
all that the medical world can lay on Me!
Through becomming all that they can hoist upon me,
I have learned that I am Not that Thing at all.
(neti neti)
Then they quickly create a NEW DISEASE,
and shuffle me off there for a while,
whilst I free myself-again
from the ailments of what has been placed in my Mind,
so that I dont forget not to stray from My heart
and remain Here
for Eternity.

Re: Whats your diagnosis?
I was too afraid to answer this, but for some reason now figure why the hell not? You guys aren't gonna judge me (I don't think anyway)
I have been diagnosed with clinical depression, and been told I could be bordering on ADHD and/or Bi-Polar and OCPD (obsessive compulsive personality disorder). Thing is can relate to quite a few things from all those when reading through so I hang onto it a bit as it (to me) justifies why I do some of the things I do and why I react the way I do.
I also think I've got a slight anger problem. I remember years ago having counseling with my parents when I was around 6-8years for anger.

Re: Whats your diagnosis?
Thanks jk. I reckon they just want to label me coz they want a reason to make me take heaps of drugs every day. But then I could be thinking that because I hate taking tablets and it's a struggle just to take the one anti-depressant each morning.

Re: Whats your diagnosis?
some are borned to weave new-ways,
perhaps pathways for others to walk,
having realised that not all Drs are enlightened
we need to find our own way there
into our own Totality.
Dont give Drs a Miss,
just do your own interior work
whilst under Their Care.

Re: Whats your diagnosis?
Our Body is from the genes of our parents,(Dna)
so all physical is made out of the past,
CHEMISTRY-WISE.
Yet we have the power to change that!
There are many cases of ppl transending ailments
(such as water on the brain)
and becomming Proffessors as such,
brilliant mathmeticions etc even though half their Brain is missing.
Body can adapt!
We mustnt lay-down and play the VICTIM ROLE.
We must mobilise our power into action
and change what we can with the Universes Power
and Natures Intelligence we were Borned into,
before our 'limited mind' comes into play
due to having a physical Brain.

Re: Whats your diagnosis?
A Drs job is to Label 'one' or 'more' of the many illnesses available onto their patients
so that a Healing Process maybe embarked upon.
It is Medical-science that creates names for less than Normal Mental behaviours found in People who are suffering due to their own lack self-understanding,thus causing imbalances within the Bodies chemical arrangements.
Medical-Science has found that 'undesired symptoms' can be altered, changed or sometimes relieved by introducing further chemicals into the physical body, which inturn effect the brain,
which we use during thinking processes!
Drs have helped me understand not only myself, but themselves also, plus the medical proffession.
We mustnt be afraid of what Labels Drs attach to us,
we must be very cautious about what we do with the label(s)
we are about to study in an effort
to make ourselves well.
We can only recognise wellness
as we have been there before
and crave it more than
the drug!
