I have recently been shown how to knit a hat for me and for a baby/small - Then needle felt something onto it. If unsure about needle felting it is when you use a needle with several throngs/ sharp parts that catch the material - sort of poke -stab in the carded/silk/all sorts of wool. Check google.

Anyway wanted to share how to knit hats , due to it being relaxing - stops the constant smoking/chatter - when you get the hang of it you drift off into a nice space. If low on budget second habd shops have knitting needles and wool.

Baby - hat - 
Using baby wool and small knitting needles - 4?
78 stitches - about 50 sticthers if big knitting needles and thicker wool - good for felting.
10cm length after rib.
Begin - Rib is knit purl about 4 - 6 rows - judged with eye then knit a row and purl a row until about 10cm - then reduce

Knit1 knit 2 together - knit 5- knit 2 together till end of row - Purl back
Knit1 knit 2 together - knit 4- knit 2 together till end of row - Purl back
Knit1 knit 2 together - knit 3- knit 2 together till end of row - Purl back
Knit1 knit 2 together - knit 2- knit 2 together till end of row - Purl back
Knit1 knit 2 together - knit 2- knit 2 together till end of row - Purl back
Repeat knit 2 then two together until about 6-8 stitchers remaining

Thread stitchers onto needle pull tight sew down seam. Inside out.
Remember to thread wool back into hat.
Needle felt away…..



Wool hat - 
Using any wool and med/large knitting needles -
79 stitches
About 11cm length - measure around head to see -
Begin knit a row and purl a row until about 11cm - then reduce


Knit1 knit 2 together - knit 5- knit 2 together till end of row - Purl back
Knit1 knit 2 together - knit 4- knit 2 together till end of row - Purl back
Knit1 knit 2 together - knit 3- knit 2 together till end of row - Purl back
Knit1 knit 2 together - knit 2- knit 2 together till end of row - Purl back
Knit1 knit 2 together - knit 2- knit 2 together till end of row - Purl back
Repeat knit 2 then two together until about 6-8 stitchers remaining

Thread stitchers onto needle pull tight sew down seam.
Remember to thread wool back into hat.

Hat fits
Needle felt away…..
If hat too big - felt rubbing soap and hot water -rinse in cold repeat till happy with size. You will now have a felted hat/lose seeing the knit and purl. That can be a good thing when you have holes lol. needle felt over holes too!!!

I hope someone finds this useful. Just wanted to add as i have become more confident at knitting, hint for the top part although it says 6-8 stichers thread off etc, i have found doing a couple of knit 2 knit 2 togethers is enough to not have that peak bit so the hat curves nicely. Up to you lol, and what your happy with.... highly recommend to all non knitters...... so relaxing and gr8 feeling of success!!!! It is also nice to know someone will wear a hat you created.....

P.S if when finished and you end up with a pointy top i tuck it in and stitch it.

An easy wool singlet would be great - friends are having babies soon so needed to find ideas to give on low budget.

Oh I wanna learn to knit! I can probably get my nana to teach me or something.. Which reminds me I have a pony to cross stitch, so I should probably do that too. I love doing stuff like that

Cross stitch is a good way to pass a couple of hours.

I am still working on my cross-stitch dragon. It is comming alsong slowly

I really enjoy knitting and find it relaxing , glad it is coming back into fashion.
