Good evening everybody
I am new here.
Have been dealing with depression for a couple of years now, firstly my partner's, and now my own as well in the last 6-8 months. I have been on Citalopram the last 2-3 weeks on recommendation of my therapist, so far not too bad, although I am waiting for the full effects to kick in. Am finding at the moment that my appetite has diminished, and I feel tired all the time, also my libido is mostly gone.... although the first and last may be because of the depression in the fisrt place.
Just do not feel like getting out of bed a lot of the time... I dont know if its the medication or the illness?
Anyway, the main thing I want to say here is a big thank you to whoever set this board up. I have been reading it the last few weeks since I stumbled across it on the Trade Me message boards, and it has been a Godsend
Thank you

Hi laworder, it's great that you stumbled upon this site through the TM message board because from what I can gather it is through a need seen on there that Paddy decided to start this site which has proved to be a very popular, safe and supportive place for a lot of people to meet and share experiences. Looking forwrd to hearing more about you and maybe meeting up in the chat room. All the very best, Judy

Re: Good evening everybody
Welcome to our 'family' here at The Big Black Dog Message Board and Chat Room laworder - and Thanks for choosing to join in with us.
Its very heartwarming to read comments such as yours about our sanctuary here at TBBD - and its cool that you found out about us from the TradeMe Message Boards because Bluebird is correct;
this place is a direct result of me getting fedup once too often with TM deleting Depression Support Threads on its then General Message Board.
Heaps of support and info and shared fears and workarounds, etc were just vanishing at the apparent whim of TM Admin, so I decided one Saturday night to do something other than whinge about it and thus on 16 August 2008 I started this place, a Message Board where 'stuff' rarely, if ever, vanishes cos of an Administrative action.
And here we are, not even 15 months later and we have well in excess of 10,000 Posts, which isn't a bad thing I reckon, 'cos it proves that folk DO have a a voice here and thats what I wanted to offer them.
Take care and stay safe,
Paddy.

Re: Good evening everybody
Hello,
I too am on citalopram. In have been on for about 3 months. When I first started I had no appitite what so ever, but it gradually comes back.
Feeling tired is certainly a side effect of the medication, as well as the libido.
Unfortuantely I'm still tired, but definitely no where near as bad as what it was like when I first started.
When I first started I was also yawning cronically!!
With the bed issues. I think it could be a bit of both- One because you're tired and that is very fair enough and the second could be your body still adjusting to the realisation about what has happened.
Anywho- One more thing. Do not go 'cold turkey' on citalopram- I am doing that now and it isn't a very nice feeling. So what i'm trying to say- is be smarter than others and try not to learn mistakes from yourself. I don't think I'll learn though, but I can try help others out.
Coming off them was my own choice, but not for the right reasons. So i'm going back on...
Before I was on citalopram I was a complete mess- Trust me on that one...But it has certainly helped me become more of 'my old self', which is what I need, and i'm sure you'd like that too.
So, all I can suggest is stick with it and I truly hope it does the job for you!
Take care,
Qwerky

Re: Good evening everybody
Reading this reminded me to take my Citalopram
I have been finding it fairly good, the drowsiness is still there though, but the anxiety/depression has receded. However to be honest I think that is more due to changes in my life than the medication. My partner has more or less stopped drinking and has sent for the Quitline stuff to stop smoking, both things combined have improved my mood no end.
Regards

Re: Good evening everybody
That is all good news Peter, with the combination of meds and circumstances it may be a brand new start for you and your partner. Best of luck to you both. Judy

Re: Good evening everybody
Hi Laworder
I'm on Citalopram too!!!!
was on it for about 2yrs then came off slowly and after a year needed to go back on it. But it works and does the trick. I have found this time it has made me a little more tired than last time but that also could be because of working nights this time round where as I wasnt last time.
Once on it after about 6 wks just started feeling like my old self worked a charm. only up to foruth week second time round so heres hoping it works the same. I have noticed that taking it at night time like just after tea seems to work for me, so when I get home from work which is only 10pm I'm ready for bed. have noticed that I'm a little less tired that when I took it at breakfast because by 2pm I was ready to flake out and then I had to go to work. Hope that helps??

Re: Good evening everybody
An update; I am finding that the tiredness has eased somewhat, and my libido has recovered a bit.
Had a bit of a low day yesterday though, started graveyard shift, and couldn't really sleep properly during the day, damned anxiety is back although not as bad as before. Partly this is because my partner is still smoking, seems to have lost interest in giving up for now. Has also been drinking, although not very much. This may be because he is having to deal with family issues at present with his brother having just had a relationship split and returning to NZ. Still any drinking tends to bother me now cos of past experiences... I never was much for drinking myself, and have now stopped altogether, what we have been through has put me right off of it.
Still, he seemed to be in a reasonably good state of mind when I got up, probably better than mine to be honest. I am feeling a bit better now, but could have done with feeling better earlier than I did.... I just felt a bit sad and down. I hope things are better tommorrow. I may bring my laptop into the bedroom and post on here if I feel like this tommorrow

Re: Good evening everybody
hmmm this is helping me immensly, I have only been on Citalopram for a week and a bit and the tiredness is very overwhelming. Like you garfield I was flaking at around 2pm at work, not good for my business!
I started to take it later at night - around 9 or 10 and found I couldn't sleep well, but dinner time (around 6?) might be good.
Did either of you get headaches?
I will watch this with vested interest!

Re: Good evening everybody
I've just started taking it again, only 4 days into it and only taking a quarter of a tablet at this stage. Last time I was really tired, so will be interesting to see what happens.

Re: Good evening everybody
as to the headache...yeah sometimes get headaches.
finding the sleepyness wearing off, a little although last night didnt get much sleep but that was due to anxiety from worry.
I do remember from last time I was on it, being really good about (happy) about wk2 and wk3 then into wk3.5 to wk4 I had a down day where I was just in bed all day.
My doctor has given me anti-anxiety pills and anti-nausea pill just to combate the first 4-6wks of going on it.
Hows the 6pm pill taking going mylife?
