Hello! I fear I am unravelling completely, and am looking for a place to regroup. Im thinking a simple farmhouse somewhere, or a bach, somewhere on my own - something simple, cheap, and I dont care if it has electricity even. Somewhere not urban. I just feel such a strong urge to get back to my roots, to simplicity, to lighting a log fire, to going to bed when it gets dark, and getting up when it gets light. To reading a book, to walking the dunes or the paddocks. I can help out at times if needed if on a farm or something.

Please, if anybody can help me, who knows a place like this, anywhere in NZ, could you please, please let me know.

Hi Maisie,

I find the YHA hostels really good, they are also not too expensive. They are located all over NZ. I am planning a holiday to one either in the West Coast or near a national park.

I have stayed in them many a time. You can sit in the lounge with a book, go for walks or joined planned tours if you want.

Thanks for the idea Ros, but it really isnt what I am looking for. I am looking for what I ask about above.

I hope you enjoy your holiday!

you could search on the net for "holiday homes", "bed and breakfasts" and "retreats".

Maisie,

when you find it, can I buy the place next door?

It sounds devine, doesn't it?

The closest I've been was a cottage on the old SH1 at Ohingaiti. My nearest neighbour was several hundred metres away and the four closest homes were all derelict and abandoned. One night, on my way back up the road from a cobbers place, I walked several hundred metres past my place cos it was so dark nothing 'cept the road marking was visible. Then a truck came and I saw where I was.

Do you look on TM Real Estate? Places like Ohura, Bennydale, little central NI settlements which time has passed by and which will never be 'big'. Ohingaiti has a little 2 bedroom place for $60k (don't offer that much - I know its current Wgtn based owner got it as a bequest and its a millstone he can ill afford - been trying to sell it since the day he found out he was its new owner. Original asking price was $120k. $45K CASH, he'd be keen enough to say Yes I reckon.

It really is a delightful thought you have and hey, I hope that you manage to find a way and a place, to make it come true for you. cheers

Paddy.

Oh dear, I havent explained myself well at all. Buying is a dream out of reach for me. Im on an invalids benefit, so my cheap is through necessity pretty damn cheap. I thought it would be enough for the abandoned shack im looking for, esp cos I can help out with farm work, but im thinking a tent may be the answer instead.

I spent much time as a teenager in a rickety old abandoned farmhouse with a lumpy bed and no phone and irregular power, but with a fireplace and a running stream, pet calves, lambs, and horses. I want to spend some months in a place like that again. The aforementioned house is no longer there, fell down years ago.

Maisie there are pages of photos in that Link of the type of place you're talking about. They must still exist so Good Luck.
