Feeling trapped

Post by Elizabeth23 on Tue Oct 08, 2013 10:45 am

Im surrounded ny a loving caring family but none of them seem to understand the world through my eyes they just tell me to harden up and feel positive, I gave up work not long ago as I was getting to stressed and now I just sit on my own in my room all day to anxious to leave the house or even meet friends.
I have panic attacks in social situations where there are groups of people, and have never even had a stable relationship due to being unable to let people in. I still live with my Mother as I'm unable to cope without her despite being in my 20s I hope one day I can find a partner, be well enough to work again and move out of home and be a normal happy young adult.

Hi Elizabeth23,

I have no answers - just wanted to let you know you aren't alone.

It is great that you have a loving caring family.
But big lols on the "harden up and feel positive". I have been told that (in different ways) many times. It is the quite possibly the worst advice someone can give you. Unfortunately it is often given by people who care about you but who don't understand and feel helpless when they see you. It isn't their fault, but it can make you feel very useless (like, why can't I harden up and feel positive? What is wrong with me?).

When I am in a bad way, I go home, lock the house up tight, close all the curtains, retreat to my bedroom, close the door, and hide under the covers. This, despite being 1) older, 2) a man (stereotypes!). I am still uncomfortable in malls ... or in places with lots of people (and my job requires that).

As for relationships, I push people away. I don't let them in. I don't want people to see the 'real' me, even though they want to. Quite possibly because I judge the 'real' me very harshly all the time, and I don't want/need others to judge me as well. I admire you for having the guts to write how you feel. Keep doing that, it can be therapeutic.

I hope (as lonesome said) you are seeking help. It is difficult, but it eventually helps.
