Noisy Neighbour Empty Noisy Neighbour

Post by Scamp Mon Oct 01, 2012 2:19 pm

I need some advice on what to do about a noisy upstairs neighbour.

The person who lives directly above me tends to get up around 1 or 2 am and bang things around. Even though I'm a light sleeper it would disturb anybody. Sometimes they bang things around for hours. This morning it was only for about five minutes, then about five minutes quiet when they were in another part of the flat and then back with a very large bang like as if they dropped a set of weights or something on the floor. It really startled me. Then they went back to bed and to sleep by the sounds of it. I'm still awake now two hours later. I'll probably be awake until sunrise and get another nap in before the daily noises if I'm lucky or just stay awake all together. Either way I'll be washed out again today. The last few nights they have been away and I have been getting sleeps from, say, 11pm to 4 or 5am and feeling relatively clear headed and a little more energetic. That is how things should be.

The person upstairs just seem to be a rough sort of person if you know what I mean. Like when they come into their room I hear the door bang after they have taken two or three steps into the room. When they open and close drawers they're rough and bang them. When they turn the light out on the way out they bang the wall. Those sorts of things.

The previous person was a shift worker and I was told that they go to bed at 9pm. I was also told that noise travels easily through the building. I soon worked that out; their snoring and rolling around in their bed used to disturb me but I didn't say anything. One night around 10:30 - 11pm I was doing a few things and accidentally slid a power cord against the wall. The next day I was told that I woke the person up. We were a mature and considerate lot then but the new person is young and inconsiderate.

I'm inclined to somehow let them know that they are disturbing my sleep. I don't want to complain but I feel I have to for the sake of my health and well being. I'm feeling anxious about this. Part of me is saying that I am entitled to get up now and bang things around and disturb them but I'm not like that. I feel as though I am getting a raw deal.

What would you do in this situation?

Woken at 3am.

Brought up the issue at the GROW group meeting Tuesday night. People said sympathetically, "Oh that shouldn't happen." and then went on with other business.

I do like listening to the birds when the sun comes up.

I've got to get out of this place.

It was 2am this morning. I was in a sound sleep.

They thumped around and then went back to bed. They have been sleeping or out ever since.

I couldn't go back to sleep until the early hours. Finally nodded off but woke off and on. Gave in and got up to have a coffee. Felt awful - fuzzy in the head. Glaring light painful. Just like a hangover.

About to take myself for a long walk. Won't be any spring in my step.

Why won't anybody post a reply?

Long, slow walk yesterday. Didn't clear head. Had dinner although not really hungry. So tired, fell asleep when head hit pillow around 9pm. Woken at 11pm. Kept awake until 2am. Drifted off around 3am. Woken around 4am.

Why do they have to thump the floor when they get out of bed and bang the door?

Thinking about using the Amitrip script my doctor gave me. Any toughts anybody?

Hi Scamp, luckily I usually sleep ok, but can sometimes wake early as in 5am. Luckily don't have noisy neighbours now, but we did years ago and ended up having to sell our house and shift elsewhere. We got sick of the constant loud music from a bunch of 18 year old tenants next door.

Hi Zin,

Thanks for your reply.

I can't remember when I slept past 5am. That's when I had to get up to go to work. If it's not work then it's neighbours. Makes me wonder just how many people have unnatural sleep. Explains why there are so many depressed people in the world and so much medication consumed. Seems to be treating the symptoms of a social disease.

I too had to sell and move on because of noisy and antisocial neighbours. The traffic one can get used to after a while.

Seeing you usually sleep OK I would guess you are not clinically depressed. Am I right?

Interesting.

My personal view was that generally chronic stress caused anxiety, chronic anxiety caused insomnia, chronic insomnia caused depression and chronic depression compounds stress. I guess there can be depressed people who sleep well, you for example.

Are you coping with stress?

Finally a decent night's sleep. Had to sleep on the garage floor though. The things one has to do these days. At least I feel like getting up and about. Not like the last few days of no more than two hour's sleep.

Reminds me of a movie I saw recently called "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?". Anybody seen that?

"They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" is a good movie. You don't know what you're missing.

Treated myself and had an early night - 9:30pm. Looked forward to another good night's sleep. Woken at 1am by neighbour's meowing cat wanting to be let in. After 30 minuted it started banging their front door. Neighbour finally let it in.

My cat can jump in my window if it wants to. I suspect their cat was brought up inside and feels scared outside. My cat was brought up outside and is much less neurotic. Can anybody else see the similarity with people and society?

I didn't get back to sleep until 5:30am. Feel my usual washed-out self again.

A relatively good sleep last night but not as good as the last few nights.

Under a bit of stress at the moment. Pushing myself. Feeling a little anxious. The usual pressures of society. That's what seems to be stopping me from getting to sleep and staying asleep at the moment.

Heard the thumping of the noisy neighbour from my quieter sleeping area in the early hours of the morning but, thankfully, was delighted to not experience the uncontrollable feeling of despair. Shifting to the quieter area was a good move.

I imagine my sleep deprivation is what parents of new-born children go through. After about four or five days of not getting any more than one or two hours of sleep at a time gave me vertigo or dizziness which some might call panic attacks. How do such parents cope? Please respond - I would like to know.

An amazing sleep last night. Woken by rattling above at 8am. Slept solidly from 10pm. Woohoo!

Everything the same except my diet. Had a few eggs for breakfast yesterday; like seven. Didn't have much dinner the previous night and had a tray of eggs in the fridge for a while that needed eating. Anyhow, I felt lethargic all yesterday. Even had a nap in a park during my walk. Have noticed before that protein tends to have a soporific effect on me.

Just did a quick search about sleep and protein and found that, as recently as 1998, a new brain chemical has been discovered that is linked to the largely unknown condition of narcolepsy. The chemical is called either hypocretin or orexin and regulates arousal, wakefulness and appetite. Here are a few links:

http://news.stanford.edu/news/2000/september6/narcolepsy-96.html
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/narcolepsy/DS00345/DSECTION=causes
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orexin
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcolepsy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyssomnia

This looks promising. I'll definitely be quizzing my doctor about this during my next consultation.

Any mostly vegetarian people out there noticed any changes in their sleep pattern following a big increase in their protein intake?

There are some inconsiderate people in this world. Some people just don't care.

After a few relatively decent nights sleep and starting to feel a bit like my old self I decided to sleep a little more comfortably without ear plugs. Bad move. At 2am the neighbour and her friend thumped around, banged drawers and carried on. Once again a restful sleep disturbed. Having moved two rooms away from the epicenter it was enough to remind me of the bad old times. A wave of stress washed over me. Got up, made a cup of tea, closed the door do my bed room to contain the chatter, went back to the tool room where I have been sleeping lately, put the ear plugs back in and will try to go back to sleep. I have an 8:45am appointment. I know I'll be awoken by the 7am alarm that I have just set. I've been waking naturally lately around 5am. Now I'll have to force myself through another foggy day. I can feel it.

gawd, that sounds exhausting just reading it.
my partner (suffers from depression less and less (yay!)) is more sensitive to things that aren't such a big deal to me, like noises, light etc.
the smallest thing can wake him, and then he's just awake for hours.
where i'm rarely woken, and then if i am, can roll over and go back to sleep for the most part.

one of his solutions is to invest in ear plugs. they're not comfortable, but so much better than lying awake for hours.

i would also write a carefully worded letter to the landlord if possible, asking if they can speak to the tenants, explain that you dont want to cause problems, but that it really is affecting your sleep, and therefore your health.

if they own the property, then i would do the same, but address it to them. you're right, you are responsible for your own well-being, and standing up for what you not only need, but also have a right to is a good idea. at least you can say you tried.

short of moving, and hoping you move into a better environment i'm not sure what else i would do.

i do quite a bit of affirmation and energy work - so one of the 'airy fairy' things that I personally would do, is stand around my room and mentally build an energetic wall to block out sound, and repel people who bother me. it worked on a number of occasions when annoying neighbours happened to move not long after i started this. 3 times it worked for me,and i haven't used this technique since. it might sound nuts, and i'm ok if you think that - but really, what have you got to lose?
