Body and Soul

Post by Scamp on Mon Sep 24, 2012 6:56 am

Hello everybody.

Firstly, thanks Paddy for starting this forum. I joined it a few days ago for something to do. Have lots of time on my hands at the moment. Thought about going along to peer-support group but decided otherwise. Don't really want to meet people in person; particularly people who go to those sorts of groups if you know what I mean. Can do the same thing here more effectively and with a lot less risk. Communicating in person is not my forte. I prefer to write/type/e-mail. Might end up going to the group further down the line. Will probably regret it if I do.

I suppose I would describe myself as a naturally depressed sort of guy. Always been a light sleeper. Like to help where I can. However, I have learnt to moderate my willingness. Some don't reciprocate, others are suspicious. Don't like greedy people who just want to take whatever they can; people who take advantage of others. I'm a bit suspicious of people who play the lame duck too.

I get a bit irritated with people who don't seem to understand plain simple language. Spoken words can be very clumsy. I don't get rude or anything. I just shrug if it's not important or try to explain it another way if I have to get my message across. I've been told that I appear aggressive and can be aloof. It's not how I feel inside. I can't change the way I look. I can smile I suppose and I do when I feel like it but I don't when I don't have to because I think it's insincere. Don't have these problems with written form. Can get my message across much more effectively.

Have tried CBT – useless – too late. Antidepressants - lifted my mood a bit by numbing the pain in my soul but they have their drawbacks and don’t really change one’s nature. They’re like giving Panadol to someone who has a brain tumour.

Society seems to be over-rated. People are expected to fit in. That causes stress which causes sleep deprivation which causes depression. Same generally with families. Some families are great. I believe that potentially good individuals are usually led astray by bad ones or lured by products and end up having a ruined life. Unrealistic expectations lead to disappointments and depression. If someone is fortunate enough to have the right disposition and/or good peer support then they are less likely to be adversely affected by emotional traumas. There aren't many fortunate people like this in the world. Most people are, at best, disappointing or, at worse, a menace or even dangerous; particularly to people who vulnerable people who have great expectations. Take the state for example. It falls way short of peoples' expectations. Same with the church in my opinion.

The mind is like the body - it can be fit and healthy from being brought up well and properly maintained; or weak and sickly from being deprived and abused. I would say I have a robust physical body but a feeble soul. I think it’s best if I lighten my emotional load. I'm a lot more content when I'm not having to deal with people. I guess some souls are better on their own.

Looking forward to hearing what people have to say about my ideas. Feel free to ask if you have any questions or want more details.
Also looking forward to help others here where I can.

By the way, my name isn't really Scamp. Scamp was the name of the family dog; a springer spaniel. The picture I chose was used to illustrate the book about Churchill's infamous black dog.

i really enjoyed reading what you wrote. i think you have a lot in common with my partner.

i dont really enjoy the part where you need to be in a place like this, looking for help etc. ... but i do hope that it helps. Smile

keep on talking - we're all listening, although not everyone (and sometimes anyone) will know what to say in reply.... but we're all still here

Fluffy_Ducks: Thank you or your post. Glad you enjoyed reading it.

I ended up going to the group session on Tuesday evening. All the people in the group have undergone counselling of some sort. It seemed worthwhile talking about where I can go for some sort of assessment. The places I have gone to have all seemed unnecessarily expensive and generally not worthwhile.

Was good too (in a way) listening to and talking about other people's woes. Confidentiality prevents me from elaborating.

I listened to a talk yesterday about the benefits of sleep. People tend to deprive themselves of it. They said that establishing a good sleeping pattern, using melatonin if necessary, can help to relieve psychotic symptoms too. I thought that was the case. I can provide more details about the talk if people are interested.

I have heard of the benefits of melatonin elsewhere. I'm not suggesting that people take melatonin; what I am saying is that good sleep seems important.

Any thoughts anybody?

sleep deprivation alone - without all the mental, emotional trauma that creates other problems is enough to send people crazy!

problem is when you have all the 'stuff' going on, it's hard to sleep!

i totallly see the sense in what you're saying

Hi Fluffy_Ducks,

So that makes four of us who can see the importance of sleep: you, me, the person who told the story and the person who heard it. Only another seven billion to go.

Anybody have any ideas on how to raise the awareness (e.g. talk to their doctor/counsellor)? You never know what it could lead to. Might even make life better for some people or perhaps society better in general.

I think I'll start a topic in another part of TBBD (like News Articles or Medications).
