Venlafaxine - and what you should know Empty Venlafaxine - and what you should know

I think it is imperative that people should be given information prior to going onto Venlafaxine, that when/if they decide to come off it, that doing so can be horrendous, and these effects can last a very long time. This is the case even if they take you down 37.5mg each time and spread the reduction out over months.

I like to make an informed choice, and if I had known this upfront, then I would not have agreed to ever be on it.

I wasnt well informed and unfortunately i have had a taste of what its going to be like. About 3 different occasions I have missed a dose it has very nasty consequences. Sweating violent stomach cramps massive headaches uncontrolable vomiting so if thats what its like when you dont take 1 dose I can only imagine what its going to be like. It will be a long long time before I attempt it.

Ibmaree - its quite scary isnt it ( we need a hugging emoticon! can these be pinched from another site? I have no idea if that is kosher or not, but there is a really good hugging one here www.saddle-up.org forums).

Paddy - that is the best information on Venlafaxine that I have found on the net. Thanks.

A couple of days on, I want to add a couple of other important things, just to be a bit balanced about the whole thing. Im writing this while still feeling the effects of coming off the damn stuff, though to a lesser extend - thank God!~

Im becoming aware that some people have tried many different antidepression meds with little success, and that Venlafaxine has given them their life back. So I dont want to throw the baby out with the bath water - I just want people to be informed before they begin that coming off can be absolutely vile. But if it is a choice of having your life back, and future withdrawal effects, then, crap as they are, then the withdrawals are worth it. The bummer about this stuff is that you cant just dip your toe into the water to try it out. You have to commit to taking them for a few weeks to see an effect and then if they arent suitable, youre already committed to having the withdrawals.

I think Venlafaxine is working for me. It's not a massive improvement, but it's enough to keep me out of the darkness and my moods seem to be reactive. I can become happy and sad depending on whats happening around me. Which was my biggest problem with Fluoxetine; I wasn't depressed, but I wasn't happy or sad eithier. Really not good if you want to get yourself well as you lose the motivation to do anything. The other drug I tried was Citalopram and all it did was make me sleep 12 hours a day, with really messed up sleeping times.

Strangely enough I haven't had much in the way of side effects. I did have a wicked headache for a couple of days when I upped my dose from 75mg to 150mg. I'll occasionally get a bought of nausea, but it's still much better than being suicidal. That shit wears you down and does some major damage to your psyche.

Im glad it is giving you some help DL. That is the most important thing, and that is a very low dose (the lowest dose believed to be therapeutic I believe) so that its good youre feeling a positive impact from it.
