Safety from Scammers.

Post by Admin (Paddy) on Mon Mar 15, 2010 6:57 am

Ministry of Economic Development has Website offering very useful information to protect ones self from being 'scammed', especially but not exclusively, via the Internet and eMails.

The site is http://www.consumeraffairs.govt.nz/scamwatch/protect-others/scam-media.html

I know it might sound obvious to some but I also know that not everyone realises this - there truely is NO POT OF GOLD just waiting to be rescued, if only you would help so and so in such and such a country and you can do so if you only .... (insert pay money, give us your full bank account details, or whatever.)

These scams work because they 'fish' the Internet, eMail included - ya send enough emails out to 'prospects' and some innocent somewhere, will bite. The bite may be by simply clicking on and opening that email. Or you may reply to it that lets them know that Yep, there is a live one at the other end, reel it in lads.

There IS NO PARCEL or Package held up at some International Border which ONLY YOU can have the authorities release, with your money. They are trying to RIP YOU OFF. They don't care about you. They don't care if you are ruined, financially or otherwise. They have ya money, and they're off. But, chances are, they will sell your 'live' email addy, cos hey, a fish bites once, whats to say if offered a new bait, it won't bite again, hmmmm?

If you receive am email from an addy you are not usually in contact with, think about whether you should open and read the message, or Delete it, unread.

And remember, if there WAS a Pot of Gold, there is no way some dudes on the other side of the world are going to know of you and your life here in Aotearoa and from the goodness of their hearts, offer to share the Pot with you, for free. Those fairy tales don't come true.

Please, take care in what you share about yourself and your family etc and with whom you share it.

Thanks,
Paddy.
