Hi mumtothree,

I went and saw dr yesterday and he said because it helps its better to take it then to take nothing. There has only been a small group of pregnant mums taken it during pregnancy.

I still in shock :-)

Hi George I wonder if it would be beneficial for you to have a look in the 'Helplines and other useful contacts' section on our 'TBBD' website? You could call these numbers and they may be able to give you some useful places to get the information you need regarding Pregnancy and Venlafaxine. I guess the other thing would be to Google those two words, however I'm sure you probably have thought of that! Good luck and congratulations. flower

Crikey, stuff has happened, hasn't it? flower scratch Wink

What I was going to suggest, is that you print out the Medsafe Consumer Information Sheets on Venlafaxine which are available to you free, at

http://www.medsafe.govt.nz/Consumers/cmi/discontinued/Efexortab.htm

(this version of the Med is being withdrawn, but ‘existing stocks’ may still be being used.; And also

http://www.medsafe.govt.nz/Consumers/cmi/e/Efexor-xr.htm

And then, after you’ve had a think and whatever, make a time to have a sit-down talk with your Practice Nurse.

Explain how things are and feel etc, and ask for I dunno, affirmation that this is a safe and wise choice and that throughout your pregnancy etc. And that you WILL be adequately supported and that whoever will or might be ‘In Charge’ on the day, knows well in advance of the meds and takes all steps to ensure a safe a full term delivery of a healthy addition to our TBBD Family.

Or something. I’m a bloke. Not much use on the best of days, I admit. But hey, I tried. If ya need a map read, to find the hospital, ask a Bloke. He'll find it - and without need to consult a map! We aint much use for a lot else some days, but. Hmmmm. Razz

You take good care of you, eh? flower

Thanks Paddy for finding that info for me. It has scared me heaps to think of what can happen now.

I sill scared and confused. When the dr opens again im going to go back and have another talk to him. I also seeing a midwife next week that supports mums with depression and pnd so thats good. She sounds really nice. I talked to her for about half and hour the other day.

I speakless. I honestly dont know whether to keep taking my meds or wait til dr is back on about th e5th jan. That seems so far away and i scared of the effects on bubs already as these early stages are some of the most important Sad

Aw hon,

I prolly didn’t much help with your ‘fears’, but I’d say you are on the right track, going back for a yarn. Just for a bit more peace of mind, aye.

‘Cos I reckon your GP has taken your sudden change in personal circumstances into account when considering what meds might and might not be appropriate right now, which is of course, as it should be.

Getting ‘in’ with that midwife you speak of too, sounds like an excellent idea, so why not stick ya feet up and relax while ya can (and can see them, pffft.)

Oh, a Tip – if say, further on in your pregnancy you have a craving for a particularly vile soft cheese late at night and you send your bloke out to get some NOW damnit and he can’t find it on the shelves anywhere he looks in the city you live in, so he drives to the next city and gets it and comes home to his lady with his prize, fresh from the hunt; don’t blast him for taking so bloody long about it, try just saying ‘Aw, Thank You Dear’. Or words to that effect.

And, if the next time late at night you urgently NEED that self-same cheese (or whatever) which you incidentally had the chance to get at any time during the bloody day, and your bloke, being by now, real smart, drives directly to that ‘other city’ and buys it, thus getting back to beloved ASAP, don’t, upon his triumphant return say ‘I don’t feel like it now’ – ‘cos chances are, you won’t also be getting a foot rub that night! Wink

I know.
I was once, 'that bloke' - and we don't forget, mmwahahahaha. You may divorce us, but we will not forget! Sorry, I digress. Embarassed Razz

Dear George,

I'm very sorry that I seem to have compounded your worries and not eased them in the slightest.

Please remember that the 'scenaria' set out in Medsafe Consumer information sheets has to cover an entire spectrum of benefits and risks associated with every prescription medication available in NZ and its most unlikely that all or even a lot of 'side effects' will come your way.

Double checking, like you plan to do with your health professionals who will be teaming up with you during and for your pregnancy and the safe and efficient delivery of another wee Life, is a good idea.

And remember, you have as a Consumer of any health service, the right to have the information presented to you in ways that 'work for you'. If they start talking and it quickly sounds like blah blah blah big long latin word, blah blah blah etc, stick ya hand up and say 'This isn't working for me. I need:

'To be given information in away which I can understand iand n a way that helps me communicate with the person providing the service.'

This is Right #6 in a Code of 10 Rights for all users of any health and disability services.

Anyone can find and read or download copies of the Code of Rights for Consumers, via the Health & Disabilities Commission website at http://www.hdc.org.nz/advocacy/advocacy-intro. Find the Langauge ya want in the list to the left of their page, click on it and off ya go.

Sorry again, hon. flower
